Series Review: True Blood
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011As the current vampire hype does not seem to get to an end a new series has lately grabbed my attention. Not really new to the English part of the world the German dubbed version will be shown on freeTV soon. I want to take this occasion for a short review of True Blood.

| I especially like the thrill of this series. OK it's not as thrilling as my current favorite mystery series Supernatural but it is very close to it. | |

| I find the story to be on average level as everything has already been seen on other mystery/vampire series and movies. Nevertheless it contains nice turns and easily keeps the attention of the viewers.
I like that humans know that there are vampires and the tensions resulting from this fact. So the characters also have to grapple with topics like racism and suppression. As an additional boost: vampire blood is sold as drugs which causes further social tensions. I have to make a 0.5 star decrease here because the whole story is build around the relationship between a human girl and a vampire. What makes love stories so important when vampires are on stage? | |

| Oh, the characters...they are clearly the most important part of True Blood. Most of them are crazy, dramatic and often creepy. Humans are far away from being perfect and always fight with their past and their feelings. Vampires are bad and have nothing in common with characters like Damon Salvator (Vampire Diaries) or Angel (Buffy) apart from being a vampire (calm down - that does not mean Angel is not a nice character). But as always in vampire stories there's an exception. But that's OK. The key question here is: Which nice girl would like an unscrupulous killer daemon ;) | |
| Actresses/Actors | |
| The main actress is Anna Paquin. She should be known as the girl in X-Men nobody would like to hug :) She is cute and her character (Sookie) suits her very well. Her male counterpart is played by Stephen Moyer. He also does a good job in acting a creepy vampire with human feelings. But I also like the supporting actresses/actors. Especially Rutina Wesley and Nelsan Ellis should be pointed out here. Good work! | |
| Atmosphere | |
| I like the atmosphere because it's not that high gloss feeling you have when watching e.g. Twilight. The pictures are sometimes very disturbing. So keep your children away from TV while watching it ;) | |

| All in all this series is one of my favorites at the moment. I cannot have enough of vampire stories and this one is far better than Vampire Diaries at least in my opinion. That combined with nice ideas and very (very) interesting characters makes the series a must-see for me. | |
You surely have to open your mind for True Blood because the current vampire hype has a negative connotation. But this series is refreshing compared to stories of movies like Twilight and series like Vampire Diaries. It’s not intended for young people and so it contains much adult content. And as one of many fans of Joss Whedons Buffy I always appreciate new ideas brought to the vampire universe. Therefore I like True Blood and you can definitely give it a chance.
